Are you green and growing?

I LOVE learning something new. If I could pick any career in the world, it would be professional student. Actually, is that even a thing? And how would one make money as a professional student? Maybe I haven’t thought this through. But I digress.

As I said, I love to learn, and I think it’s a pretty sweet life skill that keeps me on the cutting edge of marketing if not the bleeding edge. However, my daughters are at the age where they know everything already. Or they just think I know nothing. I’m not 100% sure which is the case. Either way, I hope it’s a phase, and I’m doing my part to lead by example. However, they’re the type to learn by doing, so they may be in for some disappointments before they understand that they have to keep learning and growing to be successful, and that their ol’ mom might have been right after all. The later is probably a stretch.

Here's my struggle with them; I’m wondering if you can relate. Both of my daughters are pretty stinkin’ good livestock exhibitors. They work hard on their animals, and they know what they’re doing before and during a show to be successful. I’m incredibly proud of them. But I also don’t want them to think they’re at the top of their game and they can just quit learning more. They’re going to have to keep learning to continue experiencing success. That’s a really fine line to walk as a parent – a proverbial balance beam of support for past success and hunger for even more success in the future. My clutzy self is just trying not to break my neck, hoping my daughters make good choices and keep learning, growing, and succeeding.

I think I enjoy learning since I’m in the marketing industry, or vice versa. The marketing industry is constantly changing, and you’re only as successful as your ability to continually learn new skills. Between the reemergence of direct mail pieces to the ever-changing trends like nostalgia marketing that has me completely fan girling, it’s the perfect opportunity to keep learning and growing as a professional. It’s a great time to be in the profession, and I hope you’re having as much fun as I am!
